Joshua – 1977…
You probably don’t remember that day. Even for me it now seems like it was another universe. It was your first birthday. We called Fort Ord California home and, as it was with most Army families, we were as penniless as the winos down along the banks of the Salinas River. Your mother baked you a chocolate cake from a .29 cent box mix and decorated it with some homemade icing. We stripped you down to your diaper and sat you in your highchair while we sang birthday songs to you. You laughed as you crumbled your cake into oblivion.
We had a highchair just like that and a similar cake photo😄

Certainly one for the memory bank! I have a photo of our eldest son of three looking terrified as we lit his first birthday cake. He was the most sensitive of our three, and although a happy child, he was often photographed frowning as if pondering on life itself. Unbelievably, he will be sixty next year, and is still as sensitive as ever…But a caring, wonderful human being. Happy Birthday Joshua! I’m sure you are a wonderful son too. Best wishes..

Happy Birthday, Joshua!
We gave our youngest son the cake for his second birthday – double chocolate fudge – took forever to clean up but it was fun…and he’ll be 30 next week!
Good memories and great post, Jerry. Hope Joshua AND you have a great day!

What Jerry has failed to convey is just how horrible that cake tasted. I think they forgot to put sugar in the box so it tasted like baking soda, cocoa powder, and flour. But, Josh definitely had fun playing in it.

The question is, did Young Sir actually EAT any of the cake?

Not really, he just smeared it anywhere he could reach.
