I Awaken

To a summer sun rising into the dawn

To warm my soul with its fiery blaze

To an autumn wind plucking jewel colored leaves

And floating them through the morning haze

To a winter’s chill that pushes you close

My arm falls across your lilting breast

To spring’s flowery scent that lifts my heart

To remind me how my life is blessed

My Advice to You

From the cradle to your dying breath

Let the love in your heart guide you

Save only the good and discard the rest

Don’t let the small troubles define you

Cry at the moon while you still can

For it just might be your last dance

Far too soon you could meet the end

And you will cry for one more chance

Smell the scent of morning glories

That hangs about the front porch wall

For what blooms the brightest in the spring

Is often the first to wither and die in the fall

Just Another Poor Man

It don’t make no difference

Who sits in the office at the top

The poor will still get beaten down

And that ain’t never going to stop

The game is fixed so that the rich get rich

While the poor man is doomed to fail

Don’t even think to try to better yourself

Or they might throw your ass in jail

Or they can send you off to a foreign war

Started by those that never have to fight

The poor ass bastards are the ones they always call

Because dying is our only right

So why the hell do we make a fuss

If we think the wrong one got elected

If a good man ever tried to enter the game

You know he sure as hell would be rejected

So we, the poor, don’t stand a chance

Our ship will never come in

Because it sank out in the harbor

Another hole drilled in it by the rich men

So don’t think that you got choices

And someday your time will come

Because you’re just one of the billions of voices

Living underneath their thumb

So scream your screams and cry your tears

If you think that it will make it right

Lay down your head at the end of the day

And pray they will let you make it through the night

Winter In the Park

The frosted breath of winter bears the smell of snow

It scatters life’s discard across the withered grass

Darkness devours the light from a fading sun’s glow

Frozen despair drops from black skies like jagged glass

Night steals the warmth from the dying sun’s reflection

Leafless trees hinder not the tormenting winds bite

His coat collar pulled tight offers no protection

Against the violent stab of one more frozen night

The cold crawls into his brain and numbs his senses

But in the quietness no one can hear his plea

As the soft white blanket softens his defenses,

He embraces the blessings of death…He is free

I Owe You My Life

Nothing to do but hang out behind Frank’s

The store parking lot where we sat and drank

There was just me, Randy, Terry and Luke

How many can you drink before you puke

No money or jobs and the car is dead

Small town life can really mess with your head

Wondering if you really need that shit

‘Cause some Joker said you got to have it

You came along and showed me a new way

I had to make a choice to go or stay

Either leave now or probably die here

We can run away and just disappear

Comes a time when you have to make choices

I couldn’t be alone, lost in the voices

You became me; I knew you’d never leave

I had to have trust in you and believe

You chased out the demons and let me rest

Gave me your soul and pulled me from that mess

You gave me your heart and became my wife

I gave you my love, but owe you my life
